So stoked….I am going up to MIT Media Lab‘s all day workshop this Saturday, to learn about programming in Augmented and Virtual Reality as part of their Reality, Virtually Hackathon…while I freely admit that a portion of the nitty gritty programming will undoubtedly be over my head, I’m going to get a crash course and overview of the essential process, by all the companies who are the big players in the space. I’m well chuffed, as they say in the UK. Companies presenting include Unity, the programming language used to create both Augmented Reality, and

Reality Virtually

Appearances & Press, Augmented reality, Focus: AR/VR, Innovation

Augmented Reality is projected to be a $120 billion market by 2020 in the US alone; I’m looking at starting a company there next. Fascinating technology with a ton of potential applications, far beyond mere gaming. It’s advantage is that it overlays digital onto the real world, vs having to be completely immersed in one as Virtual Reality is, so it can be used throughout the day and in many natural environments – you don’t have to choose when to use it. Harvard Business Review has a short article just published about the Mainstreaming of AR…it has been

Augmented reality: A primer

Augmented reality, Focus: AR/VR, technology trends

I recently had a friend who is a professional artist ask me to explain what the tech behind the PokemonGo phenomenon is, and how he can use it in his work. I’m pasting a bit of my response to him for those who are curious. Augmented Reality (AR) is a fascinating technology, one that’s actually been around for a while – but PokemonGo has brought it into the mainstream. What is augmented reality? A way to superimpose something created over the “real” world. It adds to reality, rather than replaces it. Some call it

Creating an alternate life

Augmented reality, Focus: AR/VR, Virtual world technology

As an old ex-Second Lifer, and a huge fan of the commercial applications for both Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality; would love it if Second Life had, well, a second life. For those who aren’t familiar with it, Second Life was (is, still) a 3D virtual world launched in 2003, where you could buy an “island” and create/interact with your own virtual world (or other people’s). It got a lot of flack for being uber-geek at the time (although a lot of real money was made there by buying and selling both virtual real estate and

Ho hum: Where’s the innovation?

Augmented reality, Convergence, Focus: AR/VR, Predictions, technology trends

Article out today on Fast Company, titled “The Smartphone Revolution is Over.” And I agree. In terms of form they’ve pretty much reached the limit of the current form factor. They got small, now they’re getting bigger, flatter, bigger screens, etc. Sure they might develop a model with a folding screen (to make it bigger again), or smaller (to fit on a wristwatch – oh joy!), or curvier, or in purple. But personally, I think if products lead with “now available in a color” in their advertising (as Motorola’s Razr is doing) the category has
